    Andrew Harrer/Bloomberg via Getty Images CAMDEN, N.J. -- Campbell Soup reported that its second-quarter profit and revenue came in above Wall Street expectations Friday, helped by the later Thanksgiving. The company said sales for its U.S. Simple Meals division rose 7 percent, lifted by higher volumes and prices and the acquisition of Plum Organics. U.S. soup sales rose 5 percent, in part because a later Thanksgiving pushed shipments to retailers back into the quarter. For the first half of the year, soup sales are still down 1 percent. Campbell Soup Co. (CPB), based in Camden, N.J., is working to find ways to boost sales of its canned soups. The company is contending with the wide availability of fresh soup in the hot food bars of supermarkets. It's also trying to update the image of its soups, and has introduced new packaging and flavors designed to appeal to a younger crowd. For the period ended Jan. 26, Campbell earned $325 million, or $1.03 a share. That compares with $190 million, or 60 cents a share, a year ago. Not including discontinued operations of its recently sold European business, Campbell said adjusted earnings were 76 cents a share, above the 73 cents a share Wall Street expected. Revenue rose to $2.28 billion, also above the $2.27 billion analysts expected, according to FactSet. The company stood by its 2014 outlook for core sales to grow by 4 percent to 5 percent and earnings a share to grow by 2 percent to 4 percent, or $2.53 to $2.58 a share. Campbell's shares rose $1.38, or 3.3 percent, to $42.35 in premarket trading. Pre-made soups can contain a large number of ingredients containing GMOs. For instance, Campbell's (CPB) popular condensed Tomato Soup lists high fructose corn syrup as its second biggest ingredient. According to the Non-GMO Project, nearly 88 percent of all corn planted in the United States is GMO.

Maltodextrins and Glucose Syrup Solids products have a multitude of food applications, including formulations where liquid syrups cannot be used. Maltodextrins are resistant to browning, provide solubility, have a low hydroscopicity (do not retain moisture), and are ideal for their carrier/bulking properties. Glucose syrup solids have a bland flavor, remain clear in solution are easy to handle and provide bulking properties.

Starch Products

The Company's starch products represented approximately 37 % of the Company's net sales for 2012. Starches are an important component in a range of processed foods, where they are used for adhesions, clouding, dusting, expansion, fat replacement, freshness, gelling, glazing, mouth feel, stabilization and texture. Starches are also used in paper production to create a smooth s! urface fo! r printed communications and to improve strength in recycled papers. Specialty starches are used for enhanced drainage, fiber retention, oil and grease resistance, improved printability and biochemical oxygen demand control.     And that, unmistakably, is a brand. Although the value of a brand is intangible and cannot be measured in dollars, it is one of the most valuable assets a company can have. This is what differentiates a product from Coca-Cola (KO), Kraft Foods Group (KRFT), Nestle (NSRGY.PK) or McDonald's (MCD) from just another unknown manufacturer of these very much essential goods and services. In my eyes, brands are as good as a promise to consumers, which differentiates the product from the rest, and promises that the standard of that certain product will be much better than that of another manufacturer. Without this brand that people trust in and are loyal to, there will not be substantial profits and future growth for the company. Do you think Warren Buffett would have bought out Heinz (HNZ) without its world-famous brand name? Definitely not! It would be as good as just another ketchup brand left on the shelf.

    On Tuesday, small cap watchmaker Movado Group, Inc (NYSE: MOV) surged 10.5% after it reported earnings and it�� the only real pure play watchmaker as�mid cap Fossil Group Inc (NASDAQ: FOSL) has diversified into other accessories and has almost tripled over the past five years. Given the problems many clothing retailers are having, its probably worth taking a closer look whether or not watchmakers or other accessory stocks might make better investments.
