On September 5, 2013, we began managing the Meridian Growth Fund. It is our distinct honor to take the helm of this venerable fund, which was founded by Richard Aster nearly 30 years ago. Through rigorous fundamental research, disciplined portfolio construction, and a focus on managing risk before reward, we hope to expand upon Meridian Growth Fund legacy. We will use the same process and philosophy that served us well managing another mutual fund for 7 years. Namely, our investment philosophy is centered on four key tenets:
1. Employ fundamental research to identify high-quality growth businesses with predictable and recurring revenues, high returns on invested capital, and attractive risk-reward profiles.
2. Build a durable portfolio that first and foremost protects capital in tough, turbulent markets and secondarily keeps up with the broader market in bull market environments.
3. Always think about risk before reward. Almost 30 years of combined experience in small- and mid-cap markets have taught us the importance of sidestepping the landmines and pitfalls that trip up many other investors.

Beyond the Dow, insurance-software maker Ebix (NASDAQ: EBIX ) soared more than 10% after news that Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS ) had offered, through an affiliate, to take the company private in a deal worth $20 per share. Given the fact that shares closed at $20.60 today, investors apparently believe the offer is too low, and expect a bidding war for the company. Given the huge opportunity that Obamacare is giving Ebix to ramp up its business, shareholders are likely right to demand more for their stock.

The next question for the market depends on whether adverse market conditions lead to changes in strategic thinking. We've already seen one victim of that change: Insurance software and services provider Ebix (NASDAQ: EBIX ) plunged more than 40% after investment firm Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) canceled a planned merger with a Goldman affiliate. M&A activity has increased recently, but falling markets often lead to fewer mergers actually going through and can also lead to reductions in IPOs coming to market as well. That's bad news for Goldman as well, which relies on underwriting such deals.
