Yesterday when the Philly Fed number disappointed and the 10-year note yields moved down and the S&P took off to the upside, the 9:00 buy program showed us exactly what was going on. When we see buy programs on the half hour it usually means that mutual funds have stock to buy. The buying is executed electronically, buying baskets of stock on the half hour. When the big buy program hit at 9:00 and another buy program at 9:30 and 10:00 we knew there was a larger agenda and we pointed it out right away. After rallying, the ESZ stalled and eventually sold off a few handles and then immediately bounced into new highs. The Pit Bull says when it goes slow and the ESZ13 trades in a narrow range or what we call chop, it is actually the buyers accumulating futures. It's really hard to fight a tape when it's like that. Right now the S&P is still going up, but we do think that it may be nearing a threshold at the 1800 to 1850 level. Most traders we talk to think the S&P will correct in the first quarter and that a taper could come either at the end of December or going into the first Fed meeting in January. As always, use stops and keep an eye on the 10-handle rule. Don't forget to catch MrTopStep on The Closing Print video found under the OptionsTV page (top bar). Dear Fellow Shareholder: The U.S. economy continues to gradually expand, building on the 5+ year recovery from the Great Recession. Employment levels are improving, though progress has been slower than expected. Inflation, for now, remains subdued. As signaled and on cue, the Fed has been weaning the economy (and investors) off of the extraordinary uantitative easingstimulus. Investors have generally shrugged off world events that might otherwise cause high anxiety (ISIS and the Middle East, Russia and Ukraine, etc.). As attention now turns to when the Fed will raise short-term interest rates, it seems plausible that volatility may intensify as the stimulus security blanket is removed. In the meantime, companies are taking advantage of the artificially low interest rate environment and sanguine investor sentiment. Merger activity remains robust, fueled by cheap and readily available credit. The IPO market has been very active, headlined by the successful Alibaba offering in September. Corporate treasurers continue to issue loads of debt on attractive terms, locking in generationally low interest rates for long terms. While these conditions will not last forever, they have helped opportunistic managers accelerate equity value growth at many companies.Investment Commentary and Outlook After three years of seemingly non-stop gains, the stock market took a pause in the third quarter. While most large cap indices eked out modest positive returns, the broader investing waters were far less placid. Small cap stocks sold off as the Russell 2000 declined more than 7% during the quarter. Energy stocks, both large and small, fell materially as investors worried about too much oil and gas supply coming online in North America (what a difference a decade makes). High yield bonds wobbled briefly in July, then again in September. Increasingly, investors are not treating all securities the same, and as stock pickers we welcome this development. Ringo Chiu/Zuma Press/Alamy There were plenty of winners and losers this week, including a fast-growing pastry shop that ran out of dough and had to shut its stores, and a maker of unmanned aircraft vehicles soaring after a blowout quarterly report. Here's a rundown of the week's best and worst. Nikola Tesla -- Winner Funding for a Nikola Tesla museum was announced on Thursday with Telsa Motors (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk is contributing $1 million to build the homage to Tesla on the grounds of the inventor's lab in Long Island. Brainy humorist Matthew "The Oatmeal" Inman has been championing a museum to honor the underrated visionary, taking to Twitter a few months ago to appeal for Musk's financial contribution. It worked. The museum's getting built. Musk gets one step closer to becoming Tony "Iron Man" Stark incarnate. And Tesla Motors does the right thing by honoring the man that gave it its name. The Container Store (TCS) -- Loser Remember when retailers dismissed concerns about sloppy holiday showings because of the snowstorms that blanketed a lot of the country in December and January? Remember how those same retailers then blamed the Easter holiday shift -- from March last year to April this year -- as a reason for the slow traffic the following quarter? Well, it seems that many chains are still stumbling, and they're running out of excuses. "We thought our sluggish sales were all because of weather and calendar shifts that began last November and continued into the spring, but now we've come to realize it's more than weather and calendar," The Container Store's CEO said on Tuesday. Kip Tindell blamed his storage and housewares store's weakness on a "retail funk" that's going around. Symptoms include "traffic declines" a "tepid retail environment" and "challenging sales." The Container Store warned that it will fall short of its earlier profit and sales targets for this fiscal year. Comparable store sales declined during the quarter ending in May, an

What 24/7 Wall St. wanted to do was evaluate this based upon past coverage and future pricing. The latest report of merit was that Comcast Corp. (NASDAQ: CMCSA) would make a joint offer with Charter Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: CHTR) to acquire Time Warner Cable. The question was, is, and likely will remain in place… At what price?
- [By Patricio Kehoe]
Although these efforts have given positive results, reducing customer losses and growing revenue per customer, the firm still operates at a disadvantage in relation to wireless and cable companies . Firms such as Comcast Corporation (CMCSA), Time Warner Cable Inc. (TWC) and Charter Communications Inc. (CHTR) have built superior platforms for Internet access, thus offering better data speeds as well as a full complement of services.

thinkretail/FlickrUpset employees used store windows to express how they feel about Wet Seal's closures. There were plenty of winners and losers this week, with the only game in town when it comes to satellite radio announcing a strong close to 2014 and a fading apparel retailer shutting down hundreds of stores. DISH Network (DISH) -- Winner The problem with kissing fat cable bills goodbye is giving up live sports programming, but that may no longer be an issue. DISH Network announced Sling TV, a streaming television service that offers a handful of channels -- including CNN, Disney Channel and Cartoon Network -- for $20 a month. More important for sports buffs, Sling TV also comes with ESPN, ESPN2 and the NBA-happy TNT. It remains to be seen if a streaming service of live TV gains traction. Folks on limited data plans will go through a lot of bandwidth, and speedy connections will be necessary for high quality. However, it's the boldest step by a relevant provider to break up the silly bundling of channels that leads to folks paying for a ton of content that they have no interest in watching. Sony (SNE) -- Loser The annual International CES expo is typically more about winners in the realm of consumer electronics than losers, but it's hard not to knock Sony for introducing a new Walkman. The portable media player has plenty of slick features, including 128 gigs of storage and hi-resolution audio. Unfortunately for the Japanese conglomerate, the Walkman NW-ZX2 is priced at a laughable $1,120. Sony has struggled to move gadgetry at much lower price points. It's going to be an uphill challenge to convince consumers that portable media players are worth four figures in any configuration. Sirius XM Radio (SIRI) -- Winner Satellite radio just keeps growing in popularity. Sirius XM announced on Wednesday that it closed out the year with 27.3 million subscribers, 1.75 million more than it had when the year began. Back in October it was only targeting 1.6 milli

One of the Dow's only two decliners, Verizon (NYSE: VZ ) lost 0.4% after DISH Network (NASDAQ: DISH ) offered to buy Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S ) for $25.5 billion. If the deal were to go through, it would offer new, serious competition to Verizon's TV package. Results are set to come Thursday for Verizon, and maybe the 4.1% dividend will help bring investors back to the stock.

Evan Agostini, Invision/APCBS president and CEO Leslie Moonves ranked No. 2 on a list of highest paid CEOs. LOS ANGELES -- Once again, media company CEOs are among the highest paid executives in the nation, occupying six of the top 10 earning spots, according to an Associated Press/Equilar study. Compensation experts say a variety of factors are at play, including the gain in media stocks, the intangible value of talent in a hit-or-miss business, the control of shareholder power in very few hands, and the decline of the financial sector. Stock Outperformers Outsized stock growth boosts the value of stock and option grants. Media companies' shares have rebounded strongly since the 2008 recession, mainly because advertising spending grows in tandem with a growing economy. That means higher-priced ads and higher-priced execs. Stocks of the six media companies on the list all outperformed the Standard & Poor's 500 index (^GPSC), which grew 128 percent in the five years through December 2013, according to FactSet. CBS (CBS) shares grew a whopping 699 percent in that period; Discovery Communications (DISCA) went up 539 percent; Viacom (VIA) rose 377 percent; Walt Disney (DIS) rose 250 percent; Time Warner (TWX) climbed 259 percent and Comcast (CMCSA) grew 223 percent. "If shareholders are happy they don't care how much a person makes," said Paul Dorf, managing director of consulting firm Compensation Resources. "When they complain most is when the market doesn't do well and their stock is going down the tubes." Talent Quotient Making it big in media means generating hits. And while top executives may not be hands-on with every decision, they are where the buck stops. Take Disney's animated blockbuster "Frozen," which grossed $1.2 billion at box offices worldwide. While Disney CEO Bob Iger didn't make the movie, he did orchestrate Disney's $7.4 billion acquisition of Pixar in 2006, which brought in talented executives to help reform Disney's faltering a

In 2011, Comcast's (NASDAQ: CMCSA ) Universal charged viewers $60 to watch Tower Heist a few weeks after its theatricalrelease via a fast-tracked VOD, but most customers scoffed at the price. Later that year, Time Warner (NYSE: TWX ) released same-day VOD versions of Melancholia, Trespass, and Margin Call, at more reasonable prices between $7 to $10. That business model, which was used for lower profile films, remained the status quo over the past three years.

The cable-television M&A chatter is making its rounds again, this time with Charter Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:CHTR), Time Warner Cable Inc. (NYSE:TWC), and Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ:CMCSA) pegged as the three points of the ever-changing parties of a never-ending love triangle. The buzz is, well, was that CHTR was first in line to nab TWC. Today, however, it's starting to look like CMCSA is more seriously interested in Time Warner Cable than first thought. TWC shares jumped on the doubly-good news that it may well become the prize in a bidding war between Charter Communications and Comcast Corporation. Meanwhile, CMCSA shares have jumped (albeit not quite as firmly) on the prospect of its ownership of TWC. What's interesting - and perhaps telling - is the fact that not only have CHTR shares not soared in the wake of what would normally be viewed as good news, but Charter shares have actually stumbled heading into the possible bidding war. Might this be an omen of what's actually in store for Charter Communications?
