Top Rising Companies To Watch For 2014

The Clean Turbo Diesel is the latest variant of the current Chevy Cruze, which has sold well since its introduction. Photo credit: GM

Since its introduction in 2009, the Chevrolet Cruze has been a strong seller for General Motors (NYSE: GM  ) -- a surprise of sorts in a segment where GM has traditionally had very weak offerings. But the Cruze wasn't just GM's best-ever compact car when it was launched; it was a surprisingly solid competitor with the likes of Toyota's (NYSE: TM  ) Corolla and Honda's (NYSE: HMC  ) Civic.

But even great cars age, and there's an all-new Cruze under development. It was expected late next year, but now, Reuters is reporting that the new Cruze has been delayed until late 2015. What's the deal? In this video, Fool.com contributor John Rosevear looks at what are likely the real reasons for the delay, and whether that's a good sign -- or a bad one -- for the progress of GM's ongoing turnaround.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By James E. Brumley]

Quick, what do Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE:WMT), Whole Foods Market, Inc. (NASDAQ:WFM), and Jamba, Inc. (NASDAQ:JMBA) - the purveyor of Jamba Juice smoothie shops - have in common? They're all three offering at least one product from KonaRed Corp. (OTCBB:KRED). All told, KRED products can be found in a variety of retail outlets, ranging from mass marketers like WMT to niche players like WFM to service providers like JMBA to convenience stores like 7-Eleven to grocers like Albertson's to.... well, the point becomes clear. KonaRed is in a lot of places. Yet, the number of spots where a KRED could multiply by eight by the middle of the year. In fact, the organization's growth rate is the most exciting - and perhaps most understated - aspect of the KonaRed story.

  • [By Rick Munarriz]

Jamba (NASDAQ: JMBA  ) shares moved 14% higher last week after kicking off the week with a 1-for-5 reverse split.

Every five shares of the smoothie chain operator were replaced with a single share priced five times higher. The end result is that Jamba closed out the month of May at $2.99, or $14.95 after the reverse split kicked in after May 31's close. It moved higher in four of the first five days of post-split trading to close out its first week at $17.

  • [By Value Digger]

C&C Energia was acquired by Pacific Rubiales (PEGFF.PK) for $9.5 (including the shares for Platino Energy), three months later. Nobody else had ever written an online article about C&C Energia.

  • [By Value Digger]

Apart from the momentum traders, the growth seekers have to check it out too. Manitok Energy is another growth company with a non-existent coverage from the online publications, although it has been growing by leaps and bounds during the last couple of years. I really enjoy uncovering such companies. In fact, by discovering under-followed growth companies with very attractive valuations is how I started my articles with SeekingAlpha one year ago. It was when I uncovered C&C Energia. I recommended this debt-free South American producer at ~$5.7 in August 2012. C&C Energia was bought out by Pacific Rubiales (PEGFF.PK) a couple of months later at $9.81. My article is here.

Advisors' Opinion:

Pfizer (NYSE: PFE  ) recently announced plans to sell its remaining 80% stake in animal-health company Zoetis (NYSE: ZTS  ) after about four months on the public market. Margins and profits aren't as high in the animal health business, which has pushed the world's largest pharmaceutical company to streamline its focus. It also highlights a delicate Catch-22 for Big Pharma.

  • [By Travis Hoium]

Pfizer (NYSE: PFE  ) is one of only a few companies to buck the trend today, climbing 2%. Shareholders were offered the option to exchange shares of Pfizer for shares of Zoetis (NYSE: ZTS  ) , an animal-health company Pfizer is fully spinning off. Shares were offered at a 7% discount to shareholders who participate, and on June 19 the company will announce the final ratio shareholders will receive. This is part of an effort to sell assets that don't align with Pfizer's efforts to focus on human drugs and vaccines. In the end, it will help reduce Pfizer's shares outstanding.

  • [By Alex Planes]

Pfizer's most notable recent move was the spinoff of Zoetis (NYSE: ZTS  ) , its former animal-health subsidiary, earlier this year. Zoetis has lost a bit of steam since it hit the market earlier this year, underperforming its former corporate parent since February. However, interest was high enough in a recent exchange of Pfizer shares for Zoetis shares that the program was oversubscribed, and only about a quarter of the nearly 1.7 billion shares tendered were accepted for the transfer. That indicates a bit less excitement in Pfizer's future than its recent share performance might suggest -- roughly a quarter of Pfizer's entire float was tendered for the exchange.

  • [By Sean Williams]

    Short-sellers attack like animals
The spinoff of Pfizer's animal health division Zoetis (NYSE: ZTS  ) has acted as both a positive and negative for the company as a whole. By spinning off Zoetis, Pfizer was able to make it easier for shareholders to understand how each company earns its keep. Conversely, though, Pfizer's human branded-drug segment is facing quite the patent cliff compared to Zoetis, which has seen steady mid-single-digit growth thanks to a surge in households owning pets and treating them like members of the family. With shareholders voting to overwhelmingly tender their Pfizer shares for Zoetis shares, short-sellers must be thinking that Pfizer's growth outlook without Zoetis' bump is going to be more erratic.
